Visibility
The share of AI answers that mention your brand at all — the headline measure of whether assistants know you exist.
Visibility is the share of tracked answers in which your brand is mentioned. It is the first number to look at, because everything else — position, sentiment, share of voice — only applies to answers where you appear at all.
How visibility is calculated
Visibility = (answers mentioning your brand / answers received) × 100
Two details decide how you read it:
- The numerator counts answers, not mentions. An answer that names your brand once and an answer that names it five times both add exactly 1. Repetition is measured by Share of Voice, not here.
- The denominator is answers received, not prompts tracked. A prompt that produced no answer in the period is excluded entirely rather than counted as a miss.
The same formula is applied to every competitor you track, so the numbers on the dashboard are directly comparable.
Worked example
You track 40 prompts. In the selected period, 36 of them produced an answer; 4 returned nothing. Your brand is named in 9 of those 36 answers.
Visibility = 9 / 36 × 100 = 25%
Note what happens with the 4 empty answers: had they been counted, the result would have been 22.5% — a lower score caused by a collection gap rather than by anything about your brand.
Why visibility matters
- It is the ceiling for every other metric. A brand mentioned in 5% of answers cannot be helped much by ranking first in those five percent.
- It is comparable across competitors. Ranking brands by visibility in one topic tells you who the assistants treat as an obvious answer and who they treat as an afterthought.
- It responds to content, not to bidding. Visibility moves when the sources assistants rely on start describing you — which is why it is read together with Citations & Sources.
Reading the number carefully
- Visibility is topic-specific. 60% in one prompt group and 8% in another is normal and useful — it says exactly which categories you own.
- Small prompt sets move in jumps. With 10 prompts, a single answer changing is a 10-point swing. Track the trend, not the daily value.
- Assistants differ. Compare like with like before concluding that visibility dropped; a change in which assistants are enabled changes the scope.
- 0% with answers received is a real signal, and the prompts behind it are listed under Prompt gaps.
